The demolition of the surrounding structures causes the ground above to move, initially heaving and eventually settling down again when new buildings have been constructed. This ground movement can cause damage to underground tunnels and railway tracks by reducing the gap (clearance) between the trains and the tunnel linings - an unsafe condition. Strainstall provide monitoring systems to assess tunnel stability and to warn asset owners should pre-determined safe limits be surpassed. Long term monitoring systems are also provided to provide information on structural integrity during the life of the tunnel and to aid maintenance scheduling.
