Tunnel monitoring is often required when construction works are being carried out nearby to assess the impact of ground movements, noise and vibration. This is particularly true of underground rail tunnels to ensure tunnel displacements do not compromise train operations. Long term monitoring may also be required to ensure the safety of the tunnel over its lifespan and to facilitate planned and targeted maintenance. Strainstall use robotic total stations and monitoring prisms to compare measured values with design values to give an accurate indication of tunnel stability. Data acquisition systems are used for the collection and analysis of the data, as results are more accurate and data can be processed rapidly, thus enabling alarm systems to be implemented to warn asset owners when pre-determined thresholds are exceeded.
