Residual Stress Measurement

Residual Stress

Strainstall provides an installation, testing and analysis service to enable manufacturers and designers of various rail components to investigate the residual stresses. This is particularly significant for components that have been hot-rolled during manufacture, where surface stresses are high as a result of the manufacturing process. The normal residual stress test involves a small hole drilled into the surface zone of the material, the results from which could be very misleading if the manufacturing stress profile is not known. The 'through thickness' test enables the measured stresses to be averaged across the section, therefore eliminating the effect of manufacturing stress from the result.

Strainstall use the centre hole technique of In-Situ Stress/Residual Stress Determinationresidual stress determination. A hole is drilled equidistant from the three radial strain gauge elements of special target rosettes. Standard target rosettes use hole diameters of 0.8, 1.6, 3.2 and 5.0mm using the incremental stress analysis as ASTM E837 with measurements made remote from free surfaces or section changes to depths of 0.4, 0.8, 1.6 and 2.5mm respectively. Strainstall have extended the residual stress measurement technique to provide through thickness stress determination of structural members.
