Strainstall has worked on many renewable energy monitoring projects, and our novel and responsive approach to instrumentation has resulted in involvement in several R&D programmes related to offshore wind turbine monopile fatigue monitoring and wave and tidal generation trials. A number of hydro-electric power stations and their associated dams and barriers have been instrumented for a variety of reasons. Generally, geotechnical instruments are required to monitor parameters including displacement, inclination, settlement, with crack width monitoring where needed. Monitoring systems are also used to provide assurance that water flow control gates can still be opened or closed. Measurements for this application include convergence (changes in the gap through which the gate moves) and inclination (the straightness of gliding gate runners). This type of system usually has a datalogger with remote access to the data
and an ability to generate alarms by email and SMS in the event of any trigger level exceedence.
Strainstall has worked with a leading wind turbine blade manufacture for many years. The work includes specialist strain gauging during the composite material blade manufacture and provision of special instrumented and calibrated load cells, forming studs that fix the blades to the turbine hub.
