Strainstall holds the patent for the widely used points pin, which replaces a component within railway points to monitor the force required for operation. The points are generally monitored using two key parameters to detect a probable failure - an increase in the timing of operation and the actual force needed to switch the rails. The load pin contains a sensor that provides an electrical output proportional to the force exerted in the drive rods. A recent evaluation in a university research programme concluded that, of the available parameters, only the direct operating force measured by the load pin gave sufficient variation between faults. This data can be used by maintenance staff to target resources effectively and avoid major and costly breakdowns.
