Optical Fibre Sensors

Strainstall, in partnership with Senoptix Ltd, supply optical fibre sensing systems for the monitoring of civil structures such as bridges, building and tunnels. Optical fibre sensors provide an alternative to traditional electric designs for many applications, particularly those that require long-term reliable measurements, operate in harsh environments, or the smallest form factor sensors.

Advantages of optical fibre sensors over foil strain gauges

• Provide extremely stable measurements that do not require calibration
• Durable and fatigue resistant
• Are intrinsically safe and so suitable for use in explosive environments
• Small size enables sensors to be imbedded within composite materials
• Immune to electromagnetic interference
• Sensor signals can be highly multiplexed allowing many sensors to be connected
  in series
• Optical fibre is extremely low loss, enabling the measurement instrument to be positioned many miles from the most remote sensor
