During the construction of the UK's seven AGR stations, Strainstall manufactured, supplied and installed strain gauges and temperature sensors for monitoring the pressure vessels. Sizewell B, the PWR stations, was similarly equipped. In total, Strainstall has worked extensively at 11 of the UK's 19 operational stations (including 8 of the 10 still operational in 2010) and 2 of the R&D reactors.
A key part of Strainstall's service to this sector has been the ability to select and install instruments and gauges that are suited to the arduous working environments. This has involved installation of strain gauges for extreme high temperatures within pressure vessels, fitted during construction or station shutdowns, with all the appropriate health and safety precautions. The sensors that we use are generally sourced from suppliers 
around the world, on the basis of technical performance and cost. We have also developed specific devices for use in nuclear power station applications, including a special 'sleeve probe' used to carry out remote replacement of thermocouples within pressure vessels.
