Prestressed concrete structures undergo distress over time due to a combination of shrinkage, creep, environmental conditions, dead loads and loads from prestressing. In order to assess the safety and serviceability of a concrete structure it is necessary to estimate the level of prestress present. Strainstall are well known for their techniques for measuring in-situ stress in prestressed concrete structures, and for many years we have provided a valuable service to structural engineers wanting confirmation of the stress regime within their structures. These stress and stress directions are found by measuring surface strain changes resulting from incremental removal of concrete. Our special techniques enable us to obtain measurements even where tendon or reinforcement spacing is as low as 50mm, using an array of smaller core holes instead of one large one.
