In-Situ Stress in Metallic Structures/Components

In-Situ Stress/Residual Stress DeterminationThe normal approach for metallic components is covered by ASTM E837 'Standard Test Method for determining Residual Stresses by the Hole Drilling Strain Gauge Method'. Strainstall has carried out numerous tests on cast components, welded assemblies and billets of material.

Strainstall has also developed the technique to enable 'through thickness' residual stresses to be determined. A hole diameter equal to the plate thickness is used with a custom installed three element strain gauge rosette. The incremental analysis provides the stress distribution to half depth. The operation is repeated from the other surface at a distance outside the zone of influence of the initial hole to determine the through thickness stress profile.In-Situ Stress/Residual Stress Determination

The average stress through the thickness is the dead load stress because the average manufacturing stress through the section is zero.
