Railway embankments and cutting slopes which are prone to landslips are often subject to temporary speed restrictions, causing delays. Strainstall has designed an embankment monitoring system that provides warnings in the event that the ground moves or conditions change such that movement could happen. The key sensors are in-place inclinometers and ground water level piezometers. One site has also trialled time domain reflectometry sensors in horizontal boreholes through the slope. These are all fitted in the location of potential slip circles to detect creep movements, ground movement and ground water levels. A display PC provides a simple user interface which can be updated frequently to indicate if ground conditions present a risk of landslip, or if movement has actually been detected.
Typically the systems are remotely accessible via GSM or fixed landline. We have supplied systems that provide real-time warnings and alarms to railway signallers to enable trains to be stopped and cautioned in the event of a suspected landslide.
