Strainstall have instrumented a number of hydro-electric power stations and their associated dams and barriers for a number of reasons. Generally, geotechnical intrumentation instruments are required to monitor parameters including displacement, inclination, settlement and crack width. Monitoring systems are also used to provide assurance that water flow control gates can still be opened or closed. Measurements for this application include convergence (changes in the gap through which the gate moves) and inclination (the straightness of sliding gate runners). This type of system usually has a datalogger with remote access to the data and an ability to generate alarms by email and SMS in the event of any trigger level exceedence.
