Bridge scour has been identified as one of the three main causes of bridge failure, and it is estimated that it accounts for 60% of all bridge failures. Strainstall have designed a bridge scour monitoring system specifically to warn bridge operators when scouring has occurred. The scour monitor comprises of a long metal tube with sensors displaced along its length which change in response to a magnetic field. The scour monitor is embedded into the river floor, and fitted around it is a magnetic collar that rests on the riverbed, which moves down the sensor whenever erosion takes place. Each time the magnetic collar passes one or more sensors, an alarm sequence is activated. This is sent as a text message warning that scour has occurred, enabling inspectors to take the appropriate action (such as closing the bridge until it can be physically examined).
The scour monitoring system has been designed to be very simple and easy to install. It is battery powered, with around a two year battery life, so the monitoring system can be left unattended for several years.
